Not to be a contrarian…but technically the first ingredient is “Beef Barley Soup” and the recipe is how to make HEARTY Beef Barley Soup…so the recipe looks quite complicated actually :) (insert sarcastic font here). I agree this recipe is pretty dump especially since it doesn’t use Saltines at all.

Looks good… it appears there are many ways to prepare quince.
Here are two things that I just wanted to mention after reading your post. Instead of rinsing the quince have you tried wiping them clean with a dishtowel then rinsing, it is a lot less messy.
Also, I find that a soft skin peeler works really well for peeling quince.
I am going to try your recipe for quince paste. Instead of cooking it I just let it dry at room temperature for a few days… this looks a little less stressful!

i think the figs would have been successful had we gone straight to the broiler (and, you know…remembered them). also – for the crumble, when i make it again (and i will make it again), i think i’ll use more oats and use ALL the topping, although, i am looking forward to a personal-size peach crumble with the leftover topping later this week. can’t wait for our next cooking adventure!
