Santa’s Workshop: Tea Towels

Happy December, everyone! We’re getting into Christmas craft crunch time now that December is here and I’ve turned into one of Santa’s elves with all my Christmas preparations. I’m making handmade gifts for several family members and have the sewing machine slouch and pricked fingers to prove it.

My mom saw some cute handmade Christmas tea towels a while back and mentioned how much she likes decorated dish towels. So, of course, I went about making her her own set!* Here’s the first one done:

I decorated both ends of a plain white cotton, flour sack-style dish towel, so that my mom can hang it anywhere in the kitchen and it’ll look nice. I ran a red and white polka dot ribbon across the length of both ends using a simple straight stitch on the sewing machine. Then I used Stitch Witchery (this stuff is brilliant, I’d never used it before) to iron on some holly leaves I’d cut out of green scrap cloth.

I hand-stitched around the holly leaves with green embroidery thread to make sure they were well-secured, since these towels will probably go through the wash pretty frequently during the holidays. Then, I sewed on a few mismatched red buttons as holly berries. Ta-da! Quick and easy custom holiday tea towels!

*I can write about these because I know my mom doesn’t read my blog with any regularity (thanks a lot, Mom!). Now don’t go sharing it with her! :)
